Styling your look. The most difficult part of your session (according to my clients).
Luckily, I'm here to help! When you book with me, I always send my clients a Style Guide to help them choose their session looks. I'm also available to clients via text in the weeks leading up to their shoot so that we can make sure they look their best. I keep a Pinterest board full of inspo, too!
While I technically give my clients free reign to wear whatever clothes they want, I definitely try to guide them to styles and colors that will photograph well. That usually doesn't include bright colors, pastel colors, or anything with logos or graphics on them. The color combos below showcase shades that I personally feel photograph the best, regardless of the season. You can see that I mix colors, textures and print in each combo, but nothing is too overwhelming. Nobody matches (this is important; when you match exact outfits, it creates these weird blobs of color in the images that we can't really separate, because you're matching!). When choosing your looks, you don't want to distract from the people in the images- your sweet family!
I always recommend starting by choosing the outfit of the person who's most concerned about how they're going to look in pictures- usually mom! I love midi or maxi dresses with some movement for the ladies! It creates interest in the images and dresses are generally flattering on everyone. From there, you can coordinate the rest of the fam. Guys are pretty easy- jeans or khakis with either a button down, sweater, or (nice) t-shirt.
Where To Shop
My favorite places to look for dresses is Baltic Born. They have the most beautiful silhouettes in all the pretty muted colors. Amazon is hit or miss, but you can order multiple styles and sizes and easily return what you don't like. For kids, I like Old Navy, H&M, and Gap. Guys are pretty easy, but I do like Old Navy, Gap, and American Eagle the most. J.Crew or J.Crew Factory and Banana Republic are also good choices. If you're looking for a certain style or color, I always start with Google and go from there!
